Grant Smith of Ankeny works at the Kum & Go near the intersection of First Street and Delaware Avenue in Ankeny. Smith said some motorists stopping at the convenience store sought tips to navigate the maze of blocked highways.
"A lot of people have come in here asking for directions since the interstates are closed. We've been getting a lot of reports from people coming in and they are talking about the explosions. I'm trying to tell people how to take the side roads," Smith said.
Theresa Kasper of Ogden stopped at the Kum & Go for gas.
"I could see the smoke all the way from Ogden," she said. Ogden is about 30 miles northwest of the explosion site.

Interstates were temporarily closed, but have reopened.
A.J. Mumm, Polk County emergency management coordinator, said in a press conference at 4 p.m. that firefighters are still in defensive mode. "There are still explosions, it's too dangerous to get to. We can tell it has subsided."
